New year, more jobs?
All About Law. | 17.01.2010So how to we feel about the prospects for the job market this year? Most indicators seem to be pointing towards an increase in graduate places this year and from the discussions we’ve been having with recruiters over the last few weeks that certainly seems to be the case. One issue that could prove particularly tricky however is the amount of graduates from last year that missed out.
Many are still looking for a job and there is little doubt that this will also be the case come graduation time later this year for the current third year crop. Recruiters have been in a privileged position over the last 18 months. A complete saturation of the graduate market and in short, loads of great people to choose from. This inevitably means that there are still a lot of great people out there that this years graduates will be competing against as well.
I’m a little concerned that this year could be worse for graduates than last year. Yes, the recession really bit badly in 2009 and yes, the economy certainly looks more optimistic for 2010. The issue is though, graduates last year were not competing with a large amount of graduates from the year before. There just weren’t enough jobs going around. 2010 will most probably bring more jobs for graduates, but I think there will be more graduates competing for jobs. I really hope this doesn’t turn out to be the case, but I think applications per place will rise yet again. Fingers crossed I’m completely way off the mark though.
Enough of the pessimism though, the recruiters I’ve met so far this year intend to really bump up places so here’s hoping to a better 2010.
