Eight of the deposed Catalan government ministers have been jailed following their landmark vote for independence on Friday. Rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds are the charges they face in the High Court of Spain.
Five other officials, who did not make an appearance in court, are subject to an arrest warrant. This includes Carles Puigdemont, who has relocated to Belgium in self-exile. Prosecutors are seeking him in an European Arrest Warrant. One leader who did attend court was granted bail.
Catalonia is a wealthy region in Spain, which was brought under direct rule after the controversial vote held by its ministers. Out of the 43% who voted, 90% voted for independence. There has been significant support from the residents of the region.
