The Oxford University Press has announced the competition to be named the Law Teacher of the Year for 2016 has moved into its second stage. At this point, the nominations have been narrowed down to a shortlist of six outstanding candidates.

The finalists for this year are:

  • Jo Boylan-Kemp, Nottingham Trent University
  • Steve Evans, University of Leicester
  • Lucinda Ferguson, University of Oxford
  • Yvonne McDermott Rees, Bangor University
  • Jennifer Sloan, Sheffield Hallam University
  • Lisa Webley, University of Westminster

2016 saw a record number of nominations for the award, many of them exceptionally detailed and heartfelt, which made the decisions of the judging panel extremely tricky. From students to heads of department, there were nominations highlighting top-level teaching across the UK.

The next stage is the most rigorous of all – the campus visits. Judges will visit each University to observe teaching processes, as well as conducting interviews with students, colleagues and heads of departments, in order to gain a more detailed picture of each candidate.

Current Law Teacher of the Year, Jane Holder from University College London, commented on how taking part in the process helped her reflect on her own teaching: “the Law Teacher of the Year award is so meaningful because you go through the process of really thinking about your teaching – both the good bits, and the bits that can be improved – and it offers a valuable opportunity to learn from the other nominees.”

The winner will be announced at a conference held in Oxford in the summer, which is hosted by Oxford University Press, in order to celebrate the excellence in legal teaching around the country.
