The AGR (Association of Graduate Recruiters), AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) and the JLD (Junior Lawyers Division of the Law Society of England and Wales) have agreed to remain as signatories to the ‘Voluntary Code to Good Practice in the Recruitment of Trainee Solicitors’
This is despite the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) removing itself from the Code in March. Now, the Code will remain in place in its’ current form for the upcoming phase of training contract recruitment for those who intend to commence their training in 2017.
Perhaps the most important signatory is the AGR, as a number of law firms are members of this body. It means that, in theory, law firms who are AGR members will abide by the Code and that an offer of a training contract will not be made before 1 September of an applicant’s final year of university.
The Chief Executive of the AGR, Stephen Isherwood, said: “The code provides students with the time and security to make considered decisions at this crucial point in their legal careers. The AGR and its members are keen to see that this recruitment season runs smoothly and that students aren’t subjected to unnecessary uncertainty.”
