Earlier this week, we revealed the Cabinet ministers who had a legal background. Now, thanks to research by BPP University, it has also been revealed that the number of MPs with a legal background has increased by 40%. Wow!
119 of 650 MPs (18.3%) have previously studied or practised law before running for election. This number is up from 85 in 2010, or some 13% of MPs.
Peter Crisp, Dean of BPP University Law School, said: “Law is a versatile discipline that gives a well-rounded insight into a huge range of valuable fields, from business to finance and public administration. Skills of critical analysis, advocacy and a deep understanding of how legislation is drafted and delivered are hugely valuable in the House of Commons, and this research only goes to prove how well an education in the law can prepare you for a successful career in public office.”
The Conservatives have the highest proportion of MPs with legal backgrounds, followed by the SNP and then Labour.
