Written By Jos Weale, Managing Editor, All About Law
Three new full fee scholarships are up for grabs with the University of Law (ULaw) for outstanding applicants to their GDL, LLM LPC or the BPTC courses. These new scholarships will be on offer for courses beginning in September 2014.
The new scholarships are named in honour of ULaw alumni who have reached the top in their legal careers since their study days. Fiona Woolf has established a highly successful international practice at City law firm CMS Cameron McKenna with a focus on major energy reform and infrastructure projects. In November 2013 she became only the second woman to be elected Lord Major of London since 1189.
The other two awards are named after Nic Coward and John Pickering. Mr Coward qualified in international law at Freshfields before entering the Football Association as their first in-house lawyer. He was the first CEO of the governing body of British horseracing before he returned to football with the Premier League in 2011. Mr Pickering reached Partner status at an exceptionally early stage in his career with Irwin Mitchell following qualification with the firm, He was at the helm of the firm’s personal injury division for over 20 years.
Professor Nigel Savage, President of the University of Law, said: “In the world of legal education, as in life, one is judged by the company one keeps and we are immensely proud to have helped put three such distinguished lawyers such as Fiona, John and Nic on the path to success.
“It’s a great honour to be able to put their names to our new scholarship and hearing the details of how they built their careers will hopefully inspire the next generation to follow in their footsteps.”
