A psychologist’s guide to understanding the Watson Glaser Test

  • 14:00-15:00
  • Wednesday 10th December

Join Dr Laura Dean, Chartered Occupational Psychologist and President Elect at the British Psychological Society, for a practical introduction to the Watson Glaser used in training contract and vacation scheme applications, lifting the lid on how these tests are designed and why law firms rely on them.

Laura will explain what the Watson Glaser is actually measuring, from inference and deduction, to evaluating arguments and spotting assumptions, and how these skills link directly to day-to-day trainee work, rather than just “doing well on a test”.

The session will take an honest look at who these tests tend to work well for, and who might find them more challenging. Laura will explore how factors such as language, culture, education background and neurodiversity can affect performance, and what this means for students from non-traditional or non-UK routes into law.

Also, Laura will focus on what you can do if you think you might be at a disadvantage. She will cover when and how to disclose relevant conditions, what reasonable adjustments might look like in practice, and how targeted preparation and practice can make a real difference to your confidence and performance.
