Family law: Life, litigation and real-world client work
What is it really like to practise family law? In this session, the BPP team will interview a panel of practising family lawyers to explore the realities of working in this challenging and deeply human area of practice. The discussion will cover the nature of the work, the skills required to succeed and the personal qualities that are particularly important when advising clients through significant life events. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the day-to-day experience of family lawyers and the routes into this rewarding specialism.

Diversity at Bates Wells
Bates Wells are keen to develop an equal, diverse and inclusive environment, where their people can flourish. The firm has their own Diversity & Inclusion forum, led by two partners, which allows their numerous creative groups and networks to thrive. The work these groups do are interwoven into the firm, to ensure that the entire firm is on the same page.
Numerous diversity and inclusion initiatives have developed as a result of these groups. Bates Wells made history as the first law firm to adopt the Halo Code, which protects employees who come to work with natural hair and protective hairstyles associated with their ethnicity. In a similar vein, the firm published an Anti-racism declaration, and hosts regular roundtable discussions. This is a space where those from ethnic minorities can share their ideas, experiences and concerns.
Bates Wells is also committed to improving access to law, especially for those from underrepresented groups. The firm works with Sutton Trust and their Pathways to Law scheme, offering events and week-long work experience to Year 12 students. They also host Year 10 students from a school in Tower Hamlets, and partnered with the Social Mobility Foundation to offer work experience, mentoring, and even more ways to champion social mobility.
Other diversity networks at the firm include Queen Street Pride. This is a network for those who identify as LGBTIQ+, as well as their allies and supporters. Representatives from this network work with HR to create inclusion-focused policies and guidance, recently contributing to the firm’s Gender-Neutral Language guidance and Transitioning Guidance. Meanwhile, UnstoppABLE supports those with disabilities by sharing written resources and external speakers, with Faith at Work holds Faith at Work lunches, where people of all faiths and none can flourish.
