In a strange turn of events, The Sun newspaper has named Balbir Singh, a 61 junior barrister from Birmingham, who heads up a criminal setup, as the richest lawyer in the UK.
Mr Singh, described as a ‘top barrister’, had his finances described as follows:
“In 2007 he got £1.1million in legal aid to make him the country’s highest-paid lawyer and the following year topped the table again with £957,000.
“In 2012 he got £523,000 and the similar amount the next year, despite being technically a junior barrister.”
Whilst this is of course, within the physical realms of possibility, it remains extremely unlikely that a junior barrister would be earning more cash than he knew what to do with, and other sources have been quick to disparage The Sun’s story.
Anonymous blogger the Secret Barrister highlighted that the article as “lazy journalism” and other leading experts in the field have openly questioned the veracity of The Sun’s article.
Mr. Singh has been arrested alongside five other legal professionals, so one way or the other, the truth will out soon.
