Dangerous drivers who cause death to receive life sentences, ministers rule
Written By Becky Kells, Editor, AllAboutLaw
People who cause death by dangerous driving are subject to lengthy custodial sentences, and a recent ruling has increased the maximum they could serve to life imprisonment.
Drivers who cause death while using their mobile phone, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, could be handed down a life sentence - the same penalty as those convicted of manslaughter. The term for death by dangerous driving was previously 14 years.
This will come as a relief to campaigners who have lost relatives due to dangerous drivers, who have been calling for the sentence to be amended. Their campaign was supported by a cross-party group of MPs.
