The University of Law has launched a new scholarship scheme with awards totalling £300,000. The 2014/15 academic year will see the University of Law offer 74 scholarships to law students as part of the new ‘Law First’ scholarship scheme.
The ‘Law First’ scholarships will range between £1,500 and £5,000, and are geared towards law students who demonstrate the greatest ability and potential, irrespective of background or personal circumstances.
Eligible students will be required to undertake an online skills assessment during July 2014, similar to the skills assessment tools used by many legal employers during their graduate recruitment processes. The top scorers in each category will win the awards.
What’s up for grabs?
The breakdown of available scholarships is as follows.
- 20 scholarships for ULaw’s professional undergraduate LLB law degrees
- 24 scholarships for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
- 10 scholarships for the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)
- 20 scholarships for the LLM Legal Practice Course (LPC).
Law First LLB scholarships will be a £1,500 contribution to first year tuition fees. To be eligible students must obtain a minimum of AAA at A-Level (or equivalent) and make The University of Law their Firm Choice by Monday, 30 June 2014.
GDL scholarship winners will receive a £3,000 award towards the GDL course fee plus a further £2,000 award offset against either a University of Law LL.M LPC or BPTC. Those who secure LL.M LPC or BPTC scholarships will receive £5,000 towards the cost of fees.
Professor Nigel Savage, President of The University of Law, said: “These prestigious awards have been created in order to attract the most academically gifted students to the legal profession by giving them a helping hand with their fees. The UK legal services sector makes a significant contribution to the success of ‘UK plc’, contributing more than £26.8bn to the UK economy annually1, and is a great success story in the context of the UK’s impact within global commerce. It is vital that top class students are continually entering the profession to secure the sector’s future growth.”
