The University of Law has announced changes to its courses which now allows government funding to be used for certain LPC courses. Previously the government postgraduate loan could only be used for full master's degrees such as the LLM, but not diplomas like the LPC or GDL.
The change has come as part of the University of Law's '100% for you' initiative, which intends to highlight the institution's support and commitment to its students.
There are two courses available which are eligible: the LPC LLM in Professional Legal Practice and the MSc in Law, Business and Management. Both courses are master degrees as well as enhanced LPC programmes. This means that once you finish the course, you'll not only have a master’s degree, but will be qualified as a solicitor as well. The courses have the same core LPC modules, but will also require you to complete two extra modules as part of the master’s course. More information about modules and entry requirements can be found on the University of Law's website, or here.
These changes mean that there are significantly more financial options for future lawyers, as previously students would be required to be sponsored by a law firm or take out a bank loan to cover the costs of the LPC. These courses also allow students to continue in academia whilst studying for a professional qualification to further their legal career.
The University of Law also offers a wide range of scholarships and bursaries, making up the largest combined scholarship programme for law students in the UK.
The loan itself is provided by the government as part of their new postgraduate finance scheme, which means the eligibility and restrictions are the same as other master's courses. Students must be a UK or EU national and the course must be your first master's course. More information about this loan can be found here.
