A vacation scheme is no ordinary work experience. You just have to look at the statistics. According to the High Fliers survey, 53% of training contracts (the mandatory vocational two-year training period with a firm which is the penultimate stage to qualification as a solicitor) are filled by students who have already completed a vacation scheme with the firm.

Applications for vacation schemes are now open, and you don’t have long to make sure you don’t miss your chance to get ahead of the game – places are already beginning to fill up!

What does a vacation scheme involve?

A vacation scheme allows you to become integrated into life at a law firm and gain a taste of what it’s like to work there as a trainee. Over a paid period of one to three weeks (depending on the firm) you will have the opportunity to work with one or more departments, carry out tasks on real cases and work closely with solicitors. You’ll get to interact with members of the firm from every level, including trainees, associates and partners.

Schemes also tend to include legal workshops and an exciting itinerary of social events with your fellow vacation schemers and the firm’s solicitors. But this isn’t just a jolly; it’s a chance to do some serious networking and find out all you can about life as a solicitor. Most importantly, this is the chance for both you and the firm to suss each other out and see if you’re the right fit. A successful vacation scheme is likely to lead to a training contract interview!

When should I apply?

What are you waiting for?! The majority of deadlines for spring and summer schemes are 31 January 2014, but some crop up earlier, and the sooner you get your application in the better! So check out the hub and get cracking! Good luck from the All About Law team!
