Training Contract
DLA Piper’s training contract (known as a graduate programme at the firm) provides trainees with a breadth of knowledge about law. The firm recruits 65 students across their five offices across the country. However, all the trainees (even those abroad) will get the chance to meet at an international induction in London. This will be a week of keynote speakers, networking events and team building, allowing trainees to make international connections.
Trainees will complete four rotations, each lasting six months. Rotations can cover any of the firm's eight practice groups: corporate, employment, finance and projects, intellectual property and technology, litigation and regulatory, real estate, restructuring and tax. This will allow you to get a wide breadth of knowledge and experience.
Aside from this, you will have the chance to do a seat abroad. Given that the firm operates in over 40 countries, you could get the chance to work in places like Melbourne, Bangkok and Singapore. You will also receive formal business skills training, and will have to complete 35 hours of pro bono work. Past trainees have worked to combat climate change and to support victims of gender-based violence.
Vacation Scheme
There are circa 100 vacation scheme places offered by DLA Piper across the firm's UK offices. The scheme is 3 weeks in duration, commencing with a week-long induction programme in the firm's London office.
The induction programme gives students the opportunity to hear from the firm's senior leaders, to participate in professional skills training, to attend networking events and to participate in responsible business activities.
Students spend the second and third weeks of the scheme undertaking work experience placements in two of the firm's practice groups. The scheme also has daily practice group insight sessions and thought leadership seminars, as well as regular social events.
