As we have seen already, clear and concise communication is one of the most important soft skills for paralegals. Miscommunication and lack of clarity can lead to inefficiencies and the precious time of clients and legal teams being wasted. Paralegals serve as intermediaries between these two parties and so effective communication and coordination is key.  

Here are some ways you can develop written and verbal communication skills.

In order to communicate clearly and professionally in legal documents, make sure you draft several versions of what you write before sending it onto a colleague. It can also help to write a draft and come back to it with fresh eyes after some time has passed in order to catch smaller errors which can be easily missed at first glance. 

When taking instructions from clients, make sure that you demonstrate proactive listening skills. This involves asking meaningful questions, providing a summary of what has been discussed and listing tasks to do going forward. This demonstrates confidence and a grasp of your responsibilities.

As well as communication, teamwork is a key soft skill. Legal work often demands collaboration due to the dynamic nature of the cases that lawyers work on. Paralegals play a crucial role in supporting lawyers carry out this type of work and so teamwork is vital in order to build strong relationships.

Legal cases often present complex challenges which require analytical thinking. These cases can only be successfully managed with effective problem-solving. In a legal context, this can mean breaking cases down into the various legal issues at hand and tackling them individually before considering how to address them as a whole in the best interest of the client. 

To strengthen this essential soft skill, paralegals should enhance their problem-solving skills by identifying issues, finding the root cause of these issues and then looking for solutions in order to solve them.

Legal work is fast-paced and demands maximum efficiency. Good time management and attention to detail are the pillars of ensuring that all tasks are carried out without sacrificing on quality, as errors can be detrimental to the client. 

Fortunately, errors can be easily caught through good attention to detail skills, such as carefully reviewing and proofreading multiple times all written work.

The key to good time management is prioritisation and the setting of realistic deadlines. This should be done on both a daily and weekly basis to ensure that you are working efficiently and to time on both shorter- and longer-term projects.
