Historically, training contract applications have demanded traditional application methods that follow a certain well-established rubric (cover letter, interview). However, we have recently seen a shift towards formats that are more dynamic and innovative, for example presentation. This change can be explained by law firms’ increasing desire to hire candidates who can effectively communicate and present information.

Understanding the role of presentations in training contracts

Presentations play an important role in training contracts. A well-crafted slideshow goes beyond static documents and figures; It provides an interactive and engaging way to convey complex legal concepts.

This type of dynamic communication showcases your adaptability and willingness to embrace different communication styles.

Aligning with firm expectations:

It is crucial to tailor the presentation so that it aligns with the practices, values, culture, and expectations of the specific law firms you’re applying to. A presentation that is well-aligned in this way demonstrates that you've reflected on and thought through the firm’s unique requirements.

Crafting a compelling presentation: strategies for success

In order to craft a compelling presentation, you must first clearly define the objectives of the presentation. These could include showcasing legal analysis, research skills and the ability to present complex legal ideas in an accessible way. You should also think carefully about the specific skills and qualities that a firm is looking for in a successful candidate and tailor your presentation to reflect this.

The presentation should also have a clear and logical structure (introduction, main points, conclusion) so that the audience can follow the presentation easily.

You should aim to convey a depth of understanding whilst also maintaining brevity and concision. You can do this by using key words and phrases that are used by the firm itself (on their website or elsewhere) to demonstrate that you have understood their values and are able to show how these are applicable to yourself. You should also prioritise the quality of your content over quantity.

Slide-by-slide breakdown: elements to include

For this slide, you should clarify the title or question related to the topic given and create an immediate focus for the audience. Aim to introduce the context concisely, setting the stage for the subsequent slides.

It is important to provide essential legal context and background information on the chosen topics; you should identify the key legal principles or concepts that you will go on to explore.

You should also introduce and break down the key legal/commercial issues or challenges that are related to the topic. The goal is to demonstrate the ability to analyse and present complex legal information in a structured manner.

In order to emphasise analytical skills, research ability and critical thinking you should also outline the approach taken to research the topic chosen.

You can also discuss relevant case law or legal precedents related to the topics to showcase the ability to connect the matter at hand with established legal principles. It’s also valuable to highlight any noteworthy legal parallels that enhance the overall presentation.

You can show foresight and the ability to think strategically by discussing the potential legal outcomes or implications related to the topic. You can discuss the broader implications of the legal issues presented, such as their implications for business.

It is also crucial to keep the audience engaged. You can do this by introducing an interactive element such as a brief legal discussion or a hypothetical scenario. You can encourage participation and questions; this shows that you are adaptable and can think on your feet.

Other tips

One way to leave a good lasting impression is to recap the key legal insights presented during the slideshow and to reinforce the main points for the audience. A concise and clear summary is more likely to stick in the audience’s mind.

The presentation assesses transferable legal skills that are crucial for a successful legal career such as analytical thinking, research skills and written and verbal communication. You should see this task as a golden opportunity to demonstrate that you possess all these skills and are able to put them into practice.

A key to success in this exercise is to practise presenting on different legal topics beforehand and run through them with someone. This allows you to reflect on your performance and receive constructive feedback.

Closing remarks

The skills that a legal presentation demands align with the demands of a training contract and a resulting legal career.
