The QLTS (qualified lawyers transfer scheme) allows lawyers qualified abroad to practise in the UK. Booking the QLTS exam is relatively straightforward, as long as you know where to look. By following the subsequent instructions, you will be able to book your next QLTS exam online. However, the QLTS is currently being phased out, to be replaced by the SQE.
Booking a QLTS exam
Kaplan QLTS have been chosen as the only QLTS exam organiser, and thus you will have to book through them to book a QLTS exam. You can book online here at any time throughout the year. After having completed the application process, a confirmation email will be sent providing extra details about the examination. It is important that during the application process you disclose if you have any additional needs that require adjustments to the exam.
Phasing out
The QLTS is already being phased out and instead solicitors will have to take the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). The SQE is made up of two exams (SQE1 and SQE2) which aim to assess one’s legal knowledge and practical skills. Click here to learn more about what the SQE exams involve.
You can continue to take the QLTS and complete the examination only if you have already passed the MCT, the first test of the QLTS.
Booking an SQE exam
To book an SQE exam, you must register online and verify your identity. At this pre-booking stage you will be able to disclose any information on necessary adjustments or exemptions. It is recommended that you complete the register and pre-booking process as soon as possible, so that you are prepared for when the booking window opens.
Unlike the QLTS, booking is done on a first come first serve basis, so it is advised to book as soon as you can after having completed the previous steps. You must check the booking window online to find out when you are able to book. Booking will open up about 12 months before the date of the exam.
It is possible that you may have to wait in a queue to access the booking page if there are a large number of applicants at the time. To complete the booking process, you should pay at the time of booking. It is possible to reschedule, for example if you want to change assessment centres. However, this is only possible to do while the booking window is still open.
