The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has created a dedicated section to provide updates about the SQE. Here, we outline some of the main points and latest developments.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority is in the process of introducing a new exam—the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). It will be a centralised method of qualification for all solicitors, and we can expect to see the first exam in November 2021. It will replace the current postgraduate diplomas on offer for aspiring solicitors—the GDL and the LPC. However, there will be a lengthy transition period in which both the SQE and the old method will be viable routes to qualification.
The SQE will be split into two exams, SQE1 and SQE2. In addition to passing both exams, you’ll need two years of SQE Qualifying Work Experience, a degree in any subject (with exemptions for relevant qualifications or work experience), and to meet the SQE character and suitability requirements as determined by the SRA.

Here is a summary of the latest updates on the SQE.
The first exam is expected to take place in autumn 2021, with November being suggested as a ballpark date. This is subject to approval from the LSB.
The SQE is expected to cost between £3,000 and £4,500 in total. SQE1 will cost between £1,100 and £1,650. SQE2 will cost between £1,900 and £2,850. This excludes any additional training.
Pilots for both SQE1 and 2 have now been completed by students.
The SRA is considering making the SQE available in the Welsh language. It cites consistency, demand and finding assessors as key considerations at this stage, and is also contemplating a phased approach to it.
The SQE will be delivered by Kaplan. Educational materials and courses to prepare candidates for the SQE will be delivered by a variety of providers.
As the SRA releases more information in its monthly bulletins about the SQE, we will outline the updates on our SQE Courses website.
