If you are interested in a career in law but are unsure in which sector you wish to work, it may be a good idea for you to choose a career based on which field is most in demand.
Family law
Recent statistics show that 43% of marriages in the UK end in divorce, meaning that family lawyers are a necessity for many. These firms negotiate issues such as the division of assets and child custody agreements, making sure that the divorce gets finalised as quickly as possible. However, these firms do not just deal with divorce but settle other issues such as adoption and prenuptial agreements.
Employment law
As long as people are continuing to work, there will always be a need for employment lawyers. They deal with a variety of disputes between employers and employees. For instance, a disagreement may arise if an employee believes they didn’t earn the amount of money they deserve; if an employee believes they were fired or treated unfairly due to their race, class, gender or sexuality; or if an employee was injured at work due to unsafe working practices. After these issues are resolved, firms work with companies to ensure similar issues do not happen again.
Technology law
In our increasingly connected world, many have raised concerns about privacy and what companies do with our personal information. Our increasing reliance on technology has led to several cybersecurity attacks, which have affected even big companies. Many businesses are curious as to how they can reduce the likelihood of being the next victim of one of these attacks and how they can protect their customers' data. Furthermore, smart home devices have generated questions about privacy and how they will be regulated.
Environmental law
Environmental lawyers aim to protect the environment. They negotiate laws surrounding issues like pollution, sustainability, renewable energy and agriculture. There has been an increased interest in climate change and what we as individuals can do to slow global warming, making this a very lucrative field.
Although it’s a good idea to use these guidelines as a starting point if you are unsure about where you want to work, your own individual preferences are more important. It is a better idea for you to decide what sector you want to specialise in based on what size firm you want to work for and which area you find most interesting.
