The AllAboutLaw perspective on Sharpe Pritchard
A career at Sharpe Pritchard provides you with the chance to work at a leading UK firm, which has a national reputation in both the public and private sectors. Many of the firm’s partners and departments are highly ranked in Chambers and the Legal 500, and their transparency surrounding career development means that their retention rates are excellent. The majority of their partners completed training contracts at the firm.
Sharpe Pritchard has quickly adapted to the new SQE process, and has introduced a 36-month apprenticeship scheme for trainees. Although this might not be what you’re used to, the apprenticeship route has several benefits. Both your training and your exams will be fully funded, and you’ll get the chance to combine traditional learning with hands-on experience. The salary you’ll receive as an apprentice is well above the statutory minimum.
Trainees complete four, six months seats, and are encouraged to provide their preferences in terms of seat choice. You’ll be able to choose from any of the firm’s key practice areas, ranging from infrastructure to employment. There’s also the option to complete a secondment, providing legal advice from the firm’s clients. Past trainees have had the opportunity to work for central government, NHS trusts and local authorities.
It’s not all work at Sharpe Pritchard. The firm is keen to promote corporate social responsibility, and have a number of initiatives in place to support their wider community. Currently, the firm provides work experience for students from underrepresented groups to increase social mobility and diversity and inclusion, takes on a number of pro bono cases and holds several fundraising and volunteering events to raise money for chosen charities.
What the firm says
We are a leading firm working across the UK. We have a national reputation for our work for public sector bodies and for private sector clients who need advice on public law issues.
A significant number of the firm's partners and departments are highly ranked in Chambers and Legal 500 as leading experts in their fields. A great deal of the work we do has a high public profile and is of high value and our clients include central government departments, local authorities and local authority companies, non-departmental public bodies, charities and commercial clients.
The largest proportion of the firm's work is in non-contentious commercial work, including procurement. This includes work in ICT, infrastructure, outsourcing, construction, health, education and general public authority contracts.
Our real estate team deals with a range of property transactions and high-profile redevelopment work, including compulsory purchase.
Our dispute resolution team deals with all types of claims, including construction disputes, procurement challenges, housing and other general litigation. We have a nationally recognised judicial review and statutory appeals practice, frequently appearing in the higher courts together with a thriving employment practice.
Our planning team undertakes work mainly for planning authorities, often involving complex major schemes, and our parliamentary team works with the planning and real estate teams on infrastructure authorisation projects and advising on legislation and procedure.
Sharpe Pritchard's commitment to employee development is evident in our refined appraisal process, focusing on professional learning and development. We have responded to employee feedback by enhancing employment benefits, including life assurance, income protection, and smart health schemes, in addition to competitive salaries. We also encourage a healthy work-life balance with a unique menopause policy and the presence of an onsite mental health first aider. With the flexibility to buy or sell annual leave and carry forward unused days, we continue to demonstrate its commitment to employee wellbeing.
We've been officially awarded as an Outstanding company to work for in 2024 and are considered in the Top 25 Best Mid-Sized Companies to Work For in the UK by Best Companies Accreditation.
