Family law: Life, litigation and real-world client work
What is it really like to practise family law? In this session, the BPP team will interview a panel of practising family lawyers to explore the realities of working in this challenging and deeply human area of practice. The discussion will cover the nature of the work, the skills required to succeed and the personal qualities that are particularly important when advising clients through significant life events. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the day-to-day experience of family lawyers and the routes into this rewarding specialism.

Diversity at Baker Mckenzie
The Firm’s dedication and commitment to creating a workplace where everybody can succeed comes from the top and it is also lived by its people, who champion ID&E efforts across the globe. The Firm has a number of affinity groups in place within local offices and globally to support employees, champion initiatives and work with clients on ongoing ID&E projects.
Some of the initiatives recently introduced by the Firm’s London office include:
- The introduction of specialised open days, each focused on a different diversity group. We were the first firm to take this approach and it has been instrumental in increasing the diversity of our future talent pool
- The Firm’s London Affinity Groups (covering LGBTQ+, Women, Wellbeing, Ethnicity and social mobility) are leading the charge in terms of our ID&E initiatives in London and provide a safe space for our people
- Launching BEGINNINGS at Baker McKenzie, an 18 month social mobility focused development scheme for year 12 students interested in a career in law.
- Launching the second cycle of the BakerEthnicity group’s Talent Incubator, a client collaboration initiative which develops professional skills, knowledge and mentoring relationships between our ethnic minority talent and key clients
- Sponsoring the Black British Business Awards, which were founded by Baker McKenzie alumna Sophie Chandauka, to celebrate the exceptional performance and outstanding achievements of Black professionals and entrepreneurs.
- Launching the fourth intake of Return-ity (a parental and return-to-work scheme) with clients and internal participants, to ease the transition back to work
