Family law: Life, litigation and real-world client work
What is it really like to practise family law? In this session, the BPP team will interview a panel of practising family lawyers to explore the realities of working in this challenging and deeply human area of practice. The discussion will cover the nature of the work, the skills required to succeed and the personal qualities that are particularly important when advising clients through significant life events. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the day-to-day experience of family lawyers and the routes into this rewarding specialism.

Training Contract
Foot Anstey typically recruits up to 15 trainees per year. Their training contracts are designed to provide a high-quality experience and exposure to high-calibre work, within their seven key sectors.
Across four six-month seats, trainees will make an immediate impact guided and supervised by colleagues who are expert, passionate and supportive. They will also gain early client exposure, through the firm's unique Virtual Trainee Programme and client secondment opportunities.
Aside from legal work, trainees have plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind.
Our Vacation Schemes
On Foot Anstey's vacation schemes, successful applicants will take part in a week's paid work experience, providing individuals with the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the firm, practical experience, and professional skills development experience.
They will typically gain hands-on experience being based in one team for a series of days with the support of an allocated supervisor and buddy.
On the final day (Friday) of each programme, individuals will complete a training contract assessment.
Achieve
Achieve is their vacation scheme, specifically designed for individuals from underrepresented groups within the UK workforce as identified by the UK government. This includes individuals from Bangladeshi, Black, Pakistani and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
Successful individuals are invited to attend a series of skills masterclasses providing insights into different areas of law, as well as developing their practical employability skills, prior to joining on day one. You can read about Nana's experience here.
This year's Achieve programme will run from their Bristol office in April 2026.
Aspire
Aspire is their vacation scheme, open to candidates from all backgrounds.
This year's Aspire programme will run from their Bristol office in June 2026.
Assessment Days
Individuals completing a vacation scheme will complete their assessment day on the final day of the programme. Individuals who have applied for a direct training contract opportunity will, if selected, be invited to an assessment day in June 2026.
There are three key elements to the assessment:
- Case-study: Individuals will be asked to prepare a response to a hypothetical task. It will be based on the type of work they are likely to carry out as a trainee. There is no need to prepare in advance or have specific legal knowledge.
- Interview: Individuals will have an hour-long interview with a partner and a member of their HR team. During this, they'll discuss the case-study they've worked on as well as their motivations for training with us. They encourage individuals to use a variety of examples from your work life, hobbies, interests, or studies.
- Group exercise: Alongside their fellow candidates, individuals will undertake a short exercise designed to test their collaboration and teamworking skills.
