Diversity at Irwin Mitchell

Irwin Mitchell believes that their people are their biggest asset, so they are passionate about creating a supportive working environment where their employees can thrive. The firm has a Partnership Diversity Board, which oversees the development and implementation of their diversity strategy. Senior members of the partnership lead internal listening groups within the firm’s support groups, focusing on things like sexual orientation, disability and race.

Entry into the firm has been developed to attract a wider pool of applicants. Unlike most law firms, applicants for training contracts are not screened by their academic qualifications. They also run a number of diversity schemes, such as their apprenticeship scheme. Their commitment to diversity has been rewarded at a number of award ceremonies.

The firm has a number of diversity initiatives aimed at supporting their employees. Irwin Mitchell supports The Halo Code, an alliance of organisations and individuals working to eliminate hair discrimination. Afro-textured hair is celebrated in all styles, and the firm champions the right of their staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles.

Other initiatives implemented include: Pride celebrations, a flexible working policy and guest speakers. Irwin Mitchell have even influenced law reform about same-sex marriage, and developed bespoke legal service to provide support to LGBT+ individuals and families.
