The AllAboutLaw perspective on Baker McKenzie
With offices across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America, Baker McKenzie provides its trainees with the opportunity to develop their legal skills in an international context. Not only will you be allowed to do an international secondment and experience a different culture, but you’ll also work with lawyers and clients all over the world every single day. This experience will allow you a better understanding of the world of law.
The firm has a wide range of offices worldwide, and this diversity is reflected in the variety of clients and practice areas. The firm focuses on ten key sectors such as disputes and employment, but also works in a variety of different sub-sectors. This ensures that no two days are the same and you’re always doing something different, even if it’s in the same seat. Baker McKenzie also works with clients from all walks of life: investment banks, world-leading automotive companies, and brands that are household names.
Working with so many different legal jurisdictions can be challenging at times, but trainees receive plenty of support from their fellow lawyers. One trainee has praised the fact that when deadlines are looming, “we’re all in the trenches together.” Trainees are also well supported by a competitive starting salary, an employee assistance scheme, and free financial advice.
What the firm says
If you’ve always been curious about different cultures and legal jurisdictions, Baker McKenzie is the firm for you. With 74 offices, the majority of trainees get to do an international secondment, giving them a chance to practise law in a completely different city. Even when you’re not globetrotting, you’ll be speaking to clients and lawyers from all over the world.
The diversity of the firm’s global workforce is reflected inside each and every office, with trainees praising the firm’s diversity efforts as “really genuine” and “not just a box ticking exercise.” Baker McKenzie has always been incredibly keen to give back to its community, by providing a variety of pro bono opportunities. Past trainees have been given the chance to assist with workshops at local prisons, educating prisoners about their rights.

Diversity interests
The firm is keen to embrace the diversity of their employees, as they believe that we work best in an office where we feel valued and accepted. Baker McKenzie is the first global law firm to introduce 40:40:20 gender targets. This means that the firm want their employees to be 40% women, 40% men and 20% men, women or non-binary by 2025. Trainees have appreciated that they feel “free to be myself, in that kind of practice areas I can flourish.”
