If you are planning on taking the SQE2, it’s a good idea to know how long the exam will last, so you can practice with time constraints. The exam is split into two parts, oral and written.

How long does the oral portion of SQE2 take?

The oral exam is taken over two consecutive days, but you only spend about two hours working each day. It will begin with an advocacy task, so you will receive a case study and then have 45 minutes to prepare a presentation. The presentation will last 15 minutes. Afterwards, you will have 10 minutes to prepare for a client interview, and then 25 minutes for a mock interview based on your preparations. This format will be repeated on the second day.

The exam will conclude with a legal analysis or an attendance note which will take 25 minutes. This order is not set in stone, and the exam can begin with the advocacy task, or the interview and legal analysis.

How long does the written portion take?

The written portion will take place over three consecutive days, but once again each day will only be a couple of hours long. It will begin with a case and matter analysis lasting 60 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of legal writing. There will then be a break of 15 minutes, followed by legal research lasting 60 minutes and legal drafting over 45 minutes. This adds up to 2 hours and 30 minutes, and the same format will be repeated on each day.

Will I be able to get extra time for SQE2?

If you think you will struggle with completing the exam in this time due to a disability, you can apply for extra time. Once you create an SQE account, you will find a “reasonable adjustments” form on the portal. You must complete it as soon as possible and include documentation about your disability, and how the adjustments you are requesting will help.

It is standard procedure to be given 25% of extra time, but if you provide further evidence you may receive more. Other adjustments are available, such as extended breaks and a reader.
