Family law: Life, litigation and real-world client work
What is it really like to practise family law? In this session, the BPP team will interview a panel of practising family lawyers to explore the realities of working in this challenging and deeply human area of practice. The discussion will cover the nature of the work, the skills required to succeed and the personal qualities that are particularly important when advising clients through significant life events. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the day-to-day experience of family lawyers and the routes into this rewarding specialism.

Can I reapply if I am unsuccessful?
Yes, Harbottle & Lewis understand that securing a training contract is very competitive. They welcome candidates to apply again if they are initially unsuccessful but are still interested in a career with the firm. If you’ve gained further experience please include this on your application form.
How will I be supervised during my training contract?
Throughout each seat you’ll get support from a Trainee Supervisor who is responsible for overseeing your day-to-day work, training and development. The Trainee Supervisor will conduct a middle- and end-of-seat appraisal to review your overall performance, assess the development of your skills and plan future training.
What happens after I finish my training contract?
Harbottle & Lewis recruit trainees with the intention that they will qualify at the firm and go on to enjoy a long and successful career with them. Upon qualification, you’ll need to choose an area of law to specialise in and business rationale the firm will determine whether there’s a vacancy in any particular group. On successful completion of your training contract, you will qualify and if offered a permanent role, you will become an Associate Harbottle & Lewis.
