Trowers & Hamlins Sustainability

Trowers & Hamlins are committed to decarbonising our operations and supply chain, managing our resources sustainably. The firm have set ambitious targets to reduce their absolute GHG emissions by 90% by 2050, with a medium-term ambition of achieving a 50% reduction by 2030 against our 2019/20 baseline year.

The firm's sustainability committee, comprising dedicated colleagues from across the firm, plays a vital role in advancing our environmental initiatives. Their passion for driving sustainability improvements ensures that our efforts are both meaningful and impactful on the ground.

In 2024, Trowers & Hamlins established a dedicated Energy and Sustainability practice. This nine-person team, led by partner Chris Paul—who also heads our internal sustainability committee—includes two highly experienced lateral hire partners brought in to enhance our client offerings in energy transition support.

As they move into new offices, the firm are also looking much more closely at the sustainability credentials of their buildings, including environmental standards and energy supply, as well as the provision of facilities which support colleagues cycling or walking to work and if there are any charging points for electric vehicles.

While the firm's primary focus is on reducing their own emissions, they also recognise the importance of taking broader actions to address the climate crisis. In 2024, Trowers & Hamlins supported an innovative UK carbon credit scheme, certified by the Verified Carbon Standard, and delivered by The Housing Associations’ Charitable Trust (HACT) and PNZ Carbon. The HACT Retrofit Credit Scheme provides additional funding to retrofit the UK's social housing with improved insulation and low-carbon heating systems, generating both environmental benefits and significant social value.

Trowers & Hamlins also actively recognises and celebrates their people's contributions to the Responsible Business agenda. Through the firm's Responsible Hours scheme, the valuable work colleagues do on social impact projects, as well as their support for ED&I and sustainability strategies, is recognised in performance appraisals and included in bonus calculations. The firm have set a goal for all colleagues to complete 25 Responsible Business hours annually, fostering a shared commitment to making a positive difference.
