Training Contract

Unlike the standard four six months seats (or even six four month seats), trainees at Freshfields complete eight seats, each lasting six months. One seat will be in dispute resolution, and two will be in global transactions (corporate, finance, real estate). This allows trainees to gain a wide breadth of experience in a number of legal areas, which will help them decide where they want to specialise.

The training contract kicks off with a two-week induction programme, allowing you to meet the senior lawyers and other trainees. It also provides you with practical skills workshops, advice and business skills training on how to work productively and handle pressure.

Throughout your contract, you’ll receive plenty of support from your TIP (trainee intake partner). This person will act as your personal mentor, and will provide you with advice and support. You will be able to meet with them anytime during your contract, in addition to a more formal meeting halfway through your training.

Freshfields trainees can get involved in a variety of different opportunities. There is the option to do a client secondment, with past trainees being seconded to Goldman Sachs, the Bank of England and to the firm’s pro bono clients. There’s also the opportunity to get involved in an international secondment, with the option to go to any of the firm’s 28 offices. Trainees also have numerous opportunities for downtime, with a variety of different clubs and social events taking place all the time.

Vacation Scheme

If you are interested in a career at Freshfields, doing a three-week vacation scheme is the perfect way to learn about life as a lawyer. You’ll gain exposure to live matters (as opposed to fictional scenarios), attend workshops about the firm’s culture and network with senior lawyers. Past candidates have gotten involved in group negotiations and have researched topics to present to partners.

There is also the opportunity to get to know everyone at a variety of different social events. Previously, candidates have climbed the O2, had dinner at a restaurant in Mayfair and even gone to a circus show. If you decide Freshfields is the firm for you, there'll be an interview for a training contract at the end of the scheme.
